University Art Newsletter Vol. 6 Issue 7, July 2007 ART ORGANIZATIONS SPOTLIGHT The month of July finds us heading to Milpitas to visit the Golden Hills Art Association. Golden Hills has been around for about four years now, and is still a relatively small group of about thirty members. Despite its size Golden Hills has a very diverse mix of artists and a good percentage of award winning artists as well. They meet on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Milpitas Police Station; 1275 North Milpitas Blvd. For more information check the Milpitas Post Newspaper the week of the first Thursday or call (408) 262-7979. Bob Semans, TRIVIA AND STUFF JUST FOR FUN Many key historical events have occurred during the month of July, the 4th of July notwithstanding. For instance by July of 1941 the United states was already in a state of undeclared war with Germany (long before Pearl Harbor), had Marines stationed in Iceland, and was actually escorting convoys in the North Atlantic. By September of that same year (again before Pearl Harbor) Roosevelt had given orders to have United States vessels attack/sink Axis ships. Our “official” entry of course came after the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. ASK BRAMSCHANDOZ Q: Is there a proper place to hang framing wire on a picture frame? A: Yes. Normally picture wire is strung about a third of the way down the overall length or width of a frame. For example if a frame measures 16” from edge to edge, the wire would be hung at about 5 1/2”, 18” would be 6” down, 24” would be 8” down and so on. There are two main reasons for the wire being placed here. The first reason is that once hung on the wall the wire will not be visible above the picture frame. The second reason is to keep the amount of lean away from the wall slight so that the picture hangs at the proper angle. Remember not to pull the wire too tight either; leave just a little slack. JEFF'S TIPS Ask yourself this question: if I had to choose just four colors to paint with what would they be? You will find that this requires some serious thought on your part not only in regard to what it is that you paint but also what medium and what techniques you use. This question gives you insights into color mixing and the versatility of different pigments. Once your choice is made, try doing a painting using just those colors. Have Fun! |
