First off, November used to be the ninth month of a calendar year consisting of ten months in Roman times and had only twenty nine days until the reign of Julius Caesar who changed it to thirty one days. With the advent of the Gregorian Calendar, November became the eleventh month in a year consisting of twelve months, and wound up having thirty days. Veteran’s Day, formerly Armistice Day was first held in 1919 after the end of WWI. In 1954, the modern day Veteran’s Day came about to honor the veterans of all wars. In Canada, Veteran’s Day is known as Remembrance Day. The First Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held in 1924; and officially begins the holiday shopping season. ASK BRAMSCHANDOZ Q: Can I use my oil painting brushes for my acrylic paints?
A: You can use the same types of brushes for acrylics and oils (i.e. bristles or synthetics), but once you have actually used a brush for oils it should remain an oil painting brush and not be used for other media. The reason for this is that no matter how diligent you are at cleaning your oil brushes, a small amount of linseed oil and solvent remains behind in the bristles. When mixed with an acrylic paint this solvent oil mixture often leaves a resist area that is unsightly and difficult to paint over . JEFF'S TIPS Here are some tips for all of those old brushes that may have seen better days. Before throwing them away, try the following creative alternatives: If the bristles are a bit worn try cutting off the flag ends and using the brush as a scrubber or cut notches in them to use as a rake brush. If the handle is getting worn you can remove the old paint, sand and seal with nail polish color. A drop of silicon glue can fix a loose ferrule. You can even cut short a long handle brush and use it as a travel brush. |
