Ironically enough, this tradition predated Christianity in much of the world. How is this possible you might ask? The answer lies in semantics and the seasons. In pre-Christian tradition it was the birth of the sun (not the son) that was celebrated at midwinter, the shortest day of the year. The ancients knew from that point on the sun would only get stronger, bringing light, warmth and hope for the new year; and it was a cause to celebrate . The ringing of bells, lighting of trees and giving of gifts all originally stem from these ancient traditions! ASK BRAMSCHANDOZ Q: My instructor says we will be doing a lot of glazing in my painting class. What does that mean? A: Whatever type of painting you will be doing, be it oils, acrylics or watercolors, you will probably be doing a fair amount of glazing. Glazing is simply the application of thin layers of paint to the painting surface, usually layers of transparent color, to achieve deep, radiant effects. You can also glaze with opaques to get effects like fog, clouds, animal fir etc. JEFF'S TIPS Christmas is a great time for making and sharing memories and a keepsake book is a great way to record those memories. Scrapbooks and/or albums have had a real resurgence of late and make terrific gifts. You can buy a pre-made book that you can customize or you can put the book together yourself! Try using stickers, decorative papers as well as 3d things like buttons etc. that will relate to the person you are giving it to. You can also use colored pencils or even acrylic paints to decorate the page borders if you choose. Have fun with your project & happy holidays! |
