TRIVIA AND STUFF JUST FOR FUN

October is the month of Halloween, so what could be more appropriate than a little holiday trivia? The original Jack 'o lanterns were carved out of turnips and rutabagas, these being more readily available than pumpkins in the old world. The reason for carving scary faces in the lanterns was to frighten away all the spirits that were believed to be roaming the countryside on that evening. Corn Husk Dollies were also made and occupied a special place in the household (usually on the table or over the hearth) to honor the harvest gods/goddesses. Halloween is now celebrated on 10/31 but was traditionally celebrated when the sun was at 17 degrees Scorpio or "Summer's End." This year that occurs 11/7/02!

ASK BRAMSCHANDOZ

Q: What is stand oil?

A: Stand oil is an oil painting medium, a heat processed form of linseed oil. The linseed oil is filtered into large vats of very hot water and thoroughly mixed. After a specified time, the mix is allowed to cool ; as the water cools the oil separates out and floats to the top. The linseed oil is then allowed to "stand" before being skimmed off, filtered and bottled for shipment.

JEFF'S TIPS

Sometimes, when we are feeling artistically blocked, staring at a blank canvas or piece of paper is the worst thing we can do. Try throwing, spilling or spattering color at random on those blank surfaces. Do these colored shapes suggest anything to you? If so, develop them!
